Turmeric is a very popular seasoning or spice in the world of gastronomy for its multiple applications. However, it is also considered to be a product with medicinal properties, according to scientific studies have concluded.
That is, turmeric is not a substitute for any medicine, but it is a spice whose properties are optimal for mitigating ailments. In addition, many medicines are composed of plants and/or spices for their components.
Turmeric has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, although according to the multiple studies carried out, it is certified that this spice has many more health benefits:
Absorption of glucose
The journal Biochemistry and Biophysical Research Communications published a study in which they ensured the positive effect that turmeric could have on glucose absorption. It should also be noted that curcumin helps to prevent excess glucose from occurring in the liver.
On the other hand, a study published in 2016 certified that turmeric curcuminoids have an effect that compares with atorvastatin, a medicine that is used to control cholesterol levels in the blood.
Similarities with aspirin and inflammatory conditions
Another feature of turmericus is that it has antiplatelet and prostacyclin modulating effects. Therefore, it is believed that the effects of this spice resemble those of aspirin, although it cannot replace the drug. Just as its anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative properties are similar to those of drugs such as ibuprofen or aspirin, for example.
On the other hand, according to the research published in the journal Phytotherapy Research, curcumin has a function that resembles that of the drugs used in the treatment of inflammatory eye diseases, as well as that of other ailments that are currently treated with steroids, as defined by subsequent studies.
Treatment against pain
50 rugby players from the Italian club Piacenza who suffered bone or muscle problems were involved in a study to analyse the effects of curcumin to treat pain caused by athletes’ injuries. For this investigation, the players were divided into two groups. One of them was given a gram of Something twice a day for 20 days. It is a food supplement based on curcumin.
Instead, the second group received treatment based on common painkillers. After completing the study, experts found that curcumin managed to better alleviate the ailments of the research participants than ibuprofen and paracetamol (the drugs administered).
This study suggests that the natural product derived from curcumin could represent a promising safe analgesic remedy for painful osteomuscular conditions associated with intense and high-impact physical activities, Dr. Francesco Di Pierro, of the pharmaceutical company Velleja Research in Milan.
However, the medicinal use of turmeric has to be previously consulted and validated by the patient’s doctor, since turmeric is still a seasoning with very beneficial properties, although it may also have adverse effects.
