Many people have more than two cups of coffee for pleasure or to stay clear, but what they may not know is that they also contribute to lengthening their life expectancy.
A study by Miguel Hernández University in Elche has shown the advantages of drinking coffee in reducing mortality. Specifically, according to this study, taking two cups of coffee a day reduces the risk of long-term death by 44% from all causes, including cancer.
The research has been carried out by the researcher of the Epidemiology Unit of Nutrition of the UMH, Laura Torres Collado, and has been published in the journal Nutrients.
In his work, Torres Collado analyzes the effect of coffee consumption on total mortality, both cardiovascular and cancer, in adults in the Valencian Community. And she concludes that 78% of the adult population in Valencia drinks coffee daily and that their usual consumption is significantly associated with lower mortality from all causes and mortality from cancer.
For the research, mortality was evaluated at 6, 12, and 18 years of age, in 1,567 people over 20 years of age who participated in the Nutrition and Health Survey of the Valencian Community. This survey is based on a representative sample of the Valencian adult population.
The more coffee, the better
A dietary questionnaire collected data on the diet, health status, and the main lifestyles of the participants, including their habits in coffee consumption. The vital state and cause of death of the participants were verified from the National Deception Index of the Valencian Community.
Thus, the study showed that those who drank up to one cup of coffee a day had a 27% lower risk of death, while those who drank two or more cups a day had a 44% lower risk.
For cancer mortality, those who drank more than one cup of coffee had a 59% lower risk of dying from the disease than non-drinkers at 18 years of follow-up. In the case of deaths from cardiovascular disease, a lower risk was also observed, although it was not significant.
For this reason, the authors claim that the usual consumption of coffee with caffeine in the long term can be safe as it has a protective effect on total mortality and cancer, and is not associated with any increase in cardiovascular mortality.
