A study published in BMJ argues that eating plant proteins can help you live longer.
The proportion is as follows: for every 3% of protein added to the diet, the risk of premature death from any cause decreases by 5%.
In general, protein consumption decreases the risk of premature death; however, this study specifies that it is the plant-based protein, not animal-based protein, that allows one to live longer.
Ahmad Esmaillzadeh, the lead author of this study, is a great advocate of the consumption of legumes, nuts, or grains instead of red and processed meats.
To carry out this study, the data from 32 previous analyses were analyzed, in which more than 715,000 people participated. Of all, 113,039 ended up dying.
The main conclusion of this research is that no other factor was considered among the people studied: neither alcohol consumption, smoking, body mass index, nor the level of exercise performed.
Therefore, plant proteins can help you live longer, but everything will depend on the characteristics of the individual.
That is, if the habits are unhealthy, it is not too likely that the plant protein could increase longevity.
